Origins
The Beaglier was first bred in Australia in the 1990s as part of a cross-breeding program. The aim of the breeders was to develop a fun-loving dog with a moderate temperament.
There are several reasons why the Cavalier was chosen as one of the parent breeds. For one, crossbreeding the two would result in a dog that had less ‘prey’ drive than the Beagle. Secondly, they wanted to keep the even temperament and good nature of the Cavalier.
Furthermore, the breeders wanted to develop a breed that had fewer health problems than the Cavalier. Since Cavaliers and Beagles were almost similar in size, they seemed like the perfect pair.
Cross-breeding usually results in a game of chance when it comes to the parents’ traits. Fortunately, the Beagliers that were developed from the out-cross had the great traits.
These dogs are generally sociable and outgoing like the Cavalier. And yet they’re also healthy, confident and strong like the Beagle.
Key Characteristics Of Beagliers
Are Beagliers Family-Friendly?
They’re suitable for most families as they are friendly, loving and take up little space.
Common Health Issues & Considerations
Beagliers may suffer from:
Elbow and hip dysplasia
Elbow and hip dysplasia are orthopedic conditions where the joints do not develop properly, leading to malformation, pain, and potential mobility issues.
Patellar Luxation
Patellar luxation in dogs is a condition where the kneecap (patella) shifts out of its normal position, causing intermittent lameness and potential long-term joint problems.
Epilepsy
A neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, often without an identifiable underlying cause, affecting the brain’s electrical activity.
Mitral Valve Disease
Mitral Valve Disease is a common cardiac condition where the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart degenerates, leading to blood flow abnormalities and potential heart failure.
Nature / Temperament
Moderate level of intelligence, polite and generally well-behaved.
Suitable Environment
The Beaglier is well-suited to a variety of living situations, including apartments or larger properties.
Other Considerations
- Beagliers are inquisitive in nature and may love to dig.
- They prefer to be in the company of their owners, and may dislike being left alone at home.

How can I take good care of my Beaglier?
Nutrition
Beagliers are generally not picky eaters, they will eat almost anything you feed them. When you adopt your Beaglier, enquire about the pup’s diet so you can continue with the same routine.
If you have to switch, ensure you’re substituting with high-quality dog food. Also change their diet gradually over a few weeks. Making abrupt changes can result in gastrointestinal upsets.
A particular health risk that these dogs face is obesity. Their passion for food can sometimes cause them to gain unnecessary weight.
If you notice that your Beaglier is packing on weight, try reducing their portions at meal times.
Grooming
The grooming you give your pup will depend on the type of fur they inherited. Most beagliers have short coats, but the texture differs from one dog to the next.
They might have wavy and silky-smooth coats if the Cavalier’s traits are dominant. Or, they could have coarse coats like the Beagle’s.
If yours has the Beagle-like coat, you’ll need to wash them once every two months. But if they have the Cavalier-like coat, they will benefit from monthly bathing.
You also should brush these coats on a daily basis or every few days. This helps to prevent accumulation of loose dead hair.
Recommended Grooming Tips
Examine and clean their floppy ears weekly. However, don’t allow water to accumulate in their ears. It can lead to bacteria growth.
Brush their teeth twice a week. They have short jaws, which are prone to plaque buildup.
Trim their nails on a regular basis.
Exercise
Beagliers have moderate exercise requirements. Taking them for a 1 hour walk every day is enough exercise. You can also divide this into two shorter walks.
Training
When it comes to ease-of-training, beaglier owners are divided on the matter. Essentially, their trainability will depend on their parent breed and subsequent personality.
If they take from the Cavalier, they’ll be eager to please; and therefore easy to train. Beagles, on the other hand, are known for being stubborn. The key is to be patient, firm and consistent when training beagliers.
Most Asked Beaglier Questions
These dogs can have physical attributes of either parent, or a mixture of both. Generally, they are shorter in height than the standard Beagle. But, they’re longer from the head to the tail due to the incorporation of traits from the Cavalier.
They are also well-muscled, making them strong enough to handle vigorous activities.
When adopting a Beaglier, inquire about the health of its parents. One good thing about this breed is that they’re immune to Syringomyelia. This is because their Beagle-like shape allows more room in their skull.
Also, the act of cross-breeding a Cavalier and a Beagle makes them healthier. Or rather less susceptible to genetic problems. Still owners should be vigilant and wary of any symptoms that affect parent breeds.
The Beagle Cavalier for sale costs between $1100 to $2200 approximately.
