Maremma Sheepdog – Wittitrin

Maremma puppies born on the 2nd of January, so available around the 2nd of March. There are 11 in total, 8 boys and 3 girls. The parents watch over our goat herd and chickens runs, and have perfect temperaments as they don't chase or play with them. They are also very friendly family dogs. Maremmas are large stock guardian type dogs, and we have had no problems losing any livestock since we got them. They were made famous saving a penguin colony in Victoria - see the movie 'Oddball'. $250 each chipped and vaccinated.

Maremma Pups $650 each - Final price to find new homes Born 9th October - Available NOW They are microchipped, local vet checked, vaccinated, and wormed. Both parents are Maremma Guardian Dogs that are working on our property and are available for inspection. The Maremma Pups are handled regularly and throughout the day, they are for a time both indoors with us and outdoors with both chooks and lambs and often free-range play as they have been together adventuring. There are 4 males and 3 females and simple collar colour and a number are all they are known by until, the right name has been found and each pup placed. 1/ Blue Collar - Male - 978142000115972 on hold for deposit 2/ Pink Collar - Female - 978142000115976 (sold) 3/ Purple Collar - Female - 978142000113607 4/ Brown Collar - Female - 978142000113052 5/ Yellow Collar - Female - 978142000113938 6/ Grey Collar - Female - 978142000115359 on hold for deposit 7/ Orange Collar - Male - 978142000113242 8/ White Collar - Male - 978142000113035 9/ Fawn Collar - Male - 978142000113204 This wonderful working breed is generally not suitable or easily adjusted for suburban living and to avoid boredom and poor social habits, they will need a good deal of care or motivation and activity so they should have a regular job to do as is their nature. The pups have spent a busy time outdoors during the day around our sheep, including newborn lambs and chickens. The puppies were born and have been raised in the paddock near the chickens so they are bonding to farm animals at an early age. A Maremma pup takes time and patience to train a guardian dog and this does not happen overnight. With time and training, you will be rewarded with an amazing dog and understand, that these dogs are instinctively different to a family pet, so, I would recommend researching first to make sure this is the puppy for you. They have beautiful temperaments and are easy to handle and at this early stage, they all show wonderful promise to fulfill their breed's task of guarding livestock, with the continued process for further training. With socialisation, you would need work to maintain their instinct or to have space or an opportunity for these dogs to work for you, and they love to protect.

Maremma Sheepdog – Murray Bridge

We are having to make the heart breaking decision to find a new home for our 5 year old sahara, shes not desexed never had puppies, house trained, good with cats and chooks and ducks she's also been with calves iv raised in our backyard, she good with our other dog but hasn't been really socialised with other dogs, she has a beautiful nature great with kids. She would suit a hobby farm or property. Due to her nature of her breed she barks alot and we have tired everything to stop this but we are constantly getting noise complaints this is the only reason we are parting with her.also because of her nature she can be very wary of new people but she is all noise and warms up quite quickly. She loves a good cuddle We would like to see her go to good home with stock she can protect and some room to run. She will not be suitable for people with a small yard she is a very large do who needs room.

Maremma pups for working homes

We have used Maremma working dogs to protect our stud dorper sheep for almost 20 years. We have had many from different sources in that time with varying degrees of success. We currently have 9 working Maremma guardians. Occasionally when we have have a male (Sire) and female (Dam), that we consider truly outstanding in terms of guarding instinct, temperament and conformation, we breed a litter primarily for our own needs. Around 3 October we will have several pups from our current litter ready for their new home. Below are a couple of photos of Halfpenny, the sire of our current litter.

The Ultimate Maremma Sheepdog Guide

About Maremma Sheepdog

The Maremma Sheepdog is a large, powerful breed that shares its ancestry with other Eastern European livestock guardian dogs. They are athletic and strong, with a muscular body and a large head.

Lifespan

Lifespan

11 to 13 years

Weight

Weight

35 to 45 kg

Height

Height

Grooming

Grooming

The coat should be brushed at least once a week, and more often during shedding season. The breed can overheat easily due to their thick fur. It is typically not a good idea to cut their hair short or shave them, as their coat helps them regulate their temperature.

Origins

The Maremma Sheepdog is an ancient breed that originated in Italy. They were originally used as guard dogs for flocks of sheep, which they protected from predators such as wolves.

The Maremma is still used for this purpose in some parts of the world, but they have also become popular companion animals in recent years.

The breed is named after the Maremma region of Tuscany, where they were first developed. These dogs were selected for their size, strength, courage, and loyalty – traits that have remained true of the breed to this day.

Key Characteristics Of Maremma Sheepdogs

Are Maremma Sheepdogs Family-Friendly?

Maremma dogs are gentle giants with calm dispositions. They are loyal and protective of their families, but can be aloof with strangers. They make excellent watchdogs, as they will bark to alert you of any intruders on your property.

If you are prepared to provide your Maremma with the exercise, training, attention, and love they need, they will make a wonderful addition to your family.

Common Health Issues & Considerations

Maremma Sheepdogs may suffer from:

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus or Bloat

Cancer

Nature / Temperament

Calm, Protective, Hardworking, Devoted, Independent

Suitable Environment

Due to their size and energy level, Maremma dogs are not the best choice for first-time dog owners or those who live in small homes or apartments. They require plenty of space to run and play, as well as patient owners who are willing to put in the time to train them properly.

Their size can sometimes be intimidating to people, so it is important to socialise your Maremma from a young age so they learn how to interact appropriately with new people and other animals.

Other Considerations

– Despite being called a “sheepdog”, they are used to guard all sorts of animals.

– Maremma Sheepdogs don’t enjoy having lots of company over.

– Some Maremma Sheepdogs can have a sensitivity to anaesthesia.

How can I take good care of my Maremma Sheepdog?

Nutrition

Maremmas are generally not picky eaters and will typically eat whatever food is available to them. However, because they are large dogs, they do require a lot of food. It is important to feed them a high quality diet that is rich in protein and fat.

Puppies should be fed three to four times per day, while adults can be fed twice per day.

It’s best  to feed your Maremma Sheepdog a dog food that is formulated for their life stage, as puppies need a more calorie-dense diet to develop properly.

Fresh drinking water should be available to them at all times.

Grooming

The thick coat of the Maremma Sheepdog requires regular grooming to prevent matting and keep it healthy.

Exercise

Maremma Sheepdogs are large, athletic dogs that need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. A daily walk or jog is a great way to keep them fit, but they also enjoy playing fetch and other active games.

A minimum of 45 minutes of exercise per day is recommended for this breed.

Training

Left unchecked, their herding instincts can lead them to chase anything that moves, so it’s important to give them an outlet for this energy. Agility training is a great way to do this, as it provides both mental and physical stimulation.

Obedience training is vital so that your Maremma Sheepdog learns to behave nicely around strangers and other animals.

Start early so that your Maremma Sheepdog learns good behaviours before they become fully grown.

You may also enrol your Maremma Sheepdog puppy in obedience training classes.

Ensure that the training methods are based on positive reinforcement.

This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.

Most Asked Maremma Sheepdog Questions

No. Maremmas are working dogs, so they need a job to do and the company of their handler in order to feel fulfilled.

No, the Maremma Sheepdog is not naturally aggressive. They will, however, protect their owners and family members if they perceive a threat.

If you are looking for a Maremma puppy for sale, it’s always better to buy from reputable, ethical breeders. Responsible Maremma dog breeders will have their dogs tested for genetic issues and health problems, giving you peace of mind that your dog will be as healthy as possible.

The average cost of a Maremma puppy for sale will be between AUD $500 and $1500.
