The name “Shih Tzu” means “little lion,” which is a misnomer given that the dog itself is anything but vicious. A perennially popular pooch, this regal and ancient breed also has other nicknames such as “Fu dog,” “Tibetan Poodle,” and “under-the-table dog.”
It is believed that Shih Tzus go all the way back to 8,000 BC, making them one of the 14 oldest dog breeds in the world.
Some say they were originally bred by Tibetan monks who sent them as gifts to Chinese emperors. Others say they were created in China by crossing other breeds with either the Pekingese or Lhasa Apso.
It was only in the late 1920s that Shi Tzus were introduced outside Asia – first in England, then in Ireland. Two decades later, they were brought to the United States. It was in 1969 that the American Kennel Club recognised this breed as a member of the Toy Group.
Are Shih Tzus family-friendly? | They sure are. Shih Tzus make excellent family pets because of their affectionate nature. They are happiest when they are with their humans, and they are great with children and other animals. |
Daily exercise needs? | It is recommended to give your Shih Tzu at least 70 minutes of exercise daily, split into two or three walks. |
Common health issues & considerations | While generally healthy, Shih Tzus are also prone to certain health conditions such as the following:
|
Lifespan | 10 to 16 years |
Nature / Temperament | Playful, affectionate, loyal, intelligent, independent, and friendly |
Size | Weight Four to seven pounds Height 23 to 27 cm |
Suitable Environment | The Shih Tzu is a very adaptable dog. It doesn’t mind where it lives as long as it is with you. It will do well in a small apartment or a large house – whether in the city, suburbs, or farm.
A backyard is not essential, as this breed should not be kenneled outside in the first place. As a housedog, the only time it should be outdoors is when it is exercising or playing. |
Grooming | Shih Tzus mat easily, so brushing or combing their coat daily is advised. |
Shih Tzu For Sales typicaly range between $1500 and $4500AUD.
A Shih Tzu will do well on high-quality dog food. The recommended daily amount is ½ to 1 cup of dry food daily. Treats can be given during training but moderately. Clean water should be made available at all times.
Some dogs are prone to obesity, so it is suggested that you watch your Shih Tzu’s calorie consumption and weight. If you must, consult with your vet about your canine’s diet.
Keeping your dog’s coat clean and tangle-free requires daily brushing and once-a-week bathing. If you wish to keep your Shih Tzu’s coat short, it is recommended to make appointments with a professional groomer every six to eight weeks.
Shih Tzus are not extremely active dogs, so they require minimal exercise per day. A short walk in the backyard or a few minutes of playtime indoors is enough. Other activities they will enjoy include hide-and-seek, ball chasing, and tug of war.
This dog can be difficult to housebreak, so crate training is advised. Do not allow your Shih Tzu to roam around your home unsupervised until it is completely trained.
When training your canine, use a method that is based on praise and rewards. Try your best not to use harsh words. Also, be firm but calm when it is misbehaving.
If you choose to enrol your dog in puppy class, it is recommended that you make sure the training methods being used are based on positive reinforcement.

The Shih Tzu is sometimes called the “chrysanthemum dog” because its facial hair looks like flower petals. It has an undershot jaw, which is another unique characteristic.
This dog’s coat is long and silky. It comes in 14 different colours and three different markings. Most have a little white spot on their forehead which is called the “Star of Buddha.”
No, it does not. This dog is a low-shedder and is even considered hypoallergenic, making it a suitable pet for allergy sufferers.
If you are considering bringing a Shih Tzu into your home, it is recommended that you adopt from a responsible breeder. This way, you can be sure that the dog you get is healthy and happy. A Shih Tzu for sale typically costs between AUD $3,000 and $6,000.
