Pets For Sale

Pets For Sale

The vast majority of Australian pet owners keep their pets indoors for the most part. We love our pets, and we want them to be as safe and healthy as possible. If you’re thinking of joining the ranks of millions of Australian pet owners, now is the time. The pet ownership rate in Australia ranks as one of the highest in the world. There are numerous listings of pets for sale on online pet communities and websites such as PetsForHomes.

If you’re actively looking at pets for sale and are planning to get one soon, then you need to be prepared to do some research. To ensure that the pet you’re getting is well cared for and responsibly bred, only look at pets for sale from reputable breeders. There are various Australian breeder associations that will enforce a code of ethics and conduct among their breeders, so there’s some accountability for the welfare of the pets.

Not only that, you have to consider the traits of each type of pet. Your ability to fulfil their needs will have a large impact on their happiness and well-being. Of course, every animal is different, but here are some general things to keep in mind.

Dogs

In general, dogs are social animals and want to be near people or interact with people. If you’re looking at dogs for sale, you’ll have to be able to commit to spending a couple of hours a day with your dog.

It’s also important to consider the age of the dog that you’re looking for, as puppies have very different personalities and needs from older dogs. The time commitment for raising a puppy is bigger, since puppies can’t be left alone for too long. Older dogs may be more used to being left to their own devices, but may require special attention during training to get them to adapt to their new homes.

You’ll also have to decide on what breed to get, as different breeds will have specific needs that will have to be addressed. Activity level, trainability, and space requirements will vary from one breed to another.

Cats

It may be surprising to hear, but cats are just as much social animals as dogs. They just display their affection in different ways. Most cats will require play and mental stimulation for a couple of hours each day. Grooming requirements will be less, as cats are fastidious about their cleanliness, but most cats will still benefit from regular baths and brushing.

Just as with dogs, you’ll need to choose whether to get a kitten or an adult cat. Kittens are adorable, but require a lot of care and attention as they grow. Adult cats may be more set in their ways, and can require you to adapt to their personalities instead of the other way around.

Different cat breeds also have different traits, but to a lesser extent than dogs.

Birds

Birds are flock animals in the wild, so they’re also remarkably social. It’s better for the bird if they have a companion throughout the day, so you may consider getting two at the same time. We don’t advise leaving a bird in its cage permanently, as they also need exercise and mental stimulation to live a long, healthy life. Birds may actually be more labour-intensive pets than dogs or cats.

It’s best if your house has a room where you can let the bird fly around for a couple of hours each day, with a cage being their sleeping quarters during the night. Bird-proofing the rest of the house is also a concern, as many birds are adept at finding cracks and crevices to hide in or escape through.

Getting a bird is a lifetime commitment, depending on the type of bird. Some long-lived species can live up to 50 years, so you’ll have to be sure that you are capable enough to care for them that long.

What Pet is Right for You?

We get our pets for all sorts of reasons. Some get pets to guard the house, others get their pets for emotional support. No matter the reason, the wellbeing of our pets is solely on us as pet owners. Before looking at pets for sale, be sure that you have the means and the willingness to put in a significant amount of time and effort so that your pet can live their best life. In return, you’ll have a companion whose love and affection will stay with you forever.
