The Ultimate Chausie Guide

About Chausie

The Chausie cat breed, with its wild allure and energetic temperament, is increasingly gaining popularity among feline enthusiasts. Descended from jungle cats, the Chausie (pronounced chow-see) is a remarkable representation of nature’s beauty.

Origins

Historical depictions suggest that the predecessors of the Chausie were likely present in ancient Egypt. Artefacts and wall paintings from ancient tombs often showcased medium-to-large cats resembling the jungle cat, Felis chaus. These depictions are strikingly similar to the modern Chausie. Given the Egyptians’ adoration for cats, it’s believed they might have tried to domesticate the wild jungle cats, which could be the very initial phases of the breed’s origin.

Key Characteristics Of Chausies

Are Chausies Family-Friendly?

Yes. Chausies tend to be sociable and bond well with families. They are not typically aggressive, making them suitable for families with children. However, given their active nature, they might be overwhelming for very young kids.

Common Health Issues & Considerations

Chausies may suffer from:

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Gastrointestinal Issues

Dental Issues

Nature / Temperament

Energetic, Inquisitive, Loyal, Agile, Playful

Suitable Environment

A spacious living environment is ideal for the Chausie to move and play freely. Small apartments may not provide them with the room they need to expend their energy.

Other Considerations

  • Thanks to their wild heritage, they possess adept hunting skills.
  • They have a distinct chirping sound, often used to communicate or express curiosity.
  • Unlike many cats, some Chausies are not averse to water and might even enjoy occasional splashes.

How can I take good care of my Chausie?

Nutrition

A Chausie’s diet should be rich in high-quality proteins. Opt for premium cat food where real meat (chicken, beef, fish) is the primary ingredient. These cats benefit from a diet that mimics what their wild ancestors might consume.

Grooming

Though their coat is relatively low-maintenance, a weekly brushing helps remove loose fur and distribute skin oils.

Exercise

Organise multiple daily play sessions. Their high energy levels mean they require ample opportunity to run, jump, and play. If possible and safe, allow your Chausie supervised outdoor time. A secured catio or leash walks can give them a taste of the wild without the dangers.

Training

Chausies are intelligent and can be trained using positive reinforcement methods. Whether it’s basic commands, litter training, or tricks, always reward good behaviour with treats or affection.

This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.

Most Asked Chausie Questions

Ideally, no. They thrive on interaction and can get bored or destructive if left alone for too long.

They can be. Chausies can get along well with other pets, especially if introduced at a younger age.

Finding a reputable Chausie breeder is the key to getting a healthy, well-behaved Chausie kitten. A Chausie kitten for sale from an ethical breeder has a much better chance of growing into a calm, gentle adult cat. The average cost of a Chausie cat for sale is usually around AUD $1500 to $3000. Some Chausies can cost up to $10000.
