Grooming
Grooming is an essential aspect of caring for a Bichoodle due to their unique coat that is inherited from their Poodle and Bichon Frise parentage.
Origins
The Bichoodle is a designer breed, meaning it was intentionally bred for specific characteristics. Though the exact date of their origin is unknown, these crossbreeds are thought to have first emerged in Australia during the late 20th century.
The aim was to combine the friendly and cheerful temperament of the Bichon Frise with the intelligence and hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle. This pairing resulted in a loving and loyal companion that is adored worldwide today.
Bichoodles are exceptional family pets. Their gentle and playful disposition makes them great with children, and they generally get along well with other pets if properly socialised.
Bichoodles are versatile dogs that can adapt to different living conditions. They do well in apartments due to their small size, but they’re also comfortable in larger homes with yards.
These dogs thrive on human interaction and should be considered part of the family rather than being left outdoors for extended periods.
Other Considerations
● They can be a little wary of strangers but are not typically aggressive.
● Because they’re highly sociable, they thrive on interaction and are happiest when included in family activities.
● Bichoodles, like many small breeds, can suffer from separation anxiety.
How can I take good care of my Bichoodle?
Nutrition
Just like any other dog breed, Bichoodles require a balanced diet to stay healthy. This breed does well on high-quality commercial dog food, but the exact amount will depend on how big your Bichoodle puppy is expected to grow.
It’s important to monitor your Bichoodle’s weight, as overfeeding can lead to obesity, a problem that can contribute to numerous health issues. Treats should be given sparingly and are best used as rewards during training sessions.
Grooming
Bichoodles typically have a curly or wavy coat that is low-shedding and often considered hypoallergenic, similar to their Poodle parent. However, this type of coat requires consistent grooming to prevent matting and tangling.
Regular brushing not only keeps your Bichoodle’s coat healthy but also helps to distribute natural oils, promoting healthier skin.
Recommended Grooming Tips
You should aim to brush your Bichoodle at least three times a week, using a slicker brush or a comb with wide teeth that can reach through their dense coat down to the skin.
Bichoodles should be bathed roughly every three to four weeks, or whenever they seem particularly dirty.
Depending on the length of your Bichoodle’s coat, they might require haircuts every 6-8 weeks.
Exercise
A Bichoodle, like most dogs, requires regular exercise to stay physically healthy, mentally stimulated, and happy. Their small size might suggest they don’t require much activity, but these energetic little dogs enjoy moving and playing.
Daily walks are essential for a Bichoodle. Aim for at least 30 to 60 minutes of walking per day, which can be divided into two or more walks.
Training
Training sessions are another good way to give your Bichoodle both mental and physical exercise. Whether you’re teaching basic obedience commands, tricks, or agility skills, training keeps their mind sharp and body moving.
This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.
While no dog breed is entirely hypoallergenic, Bichoodles are among the breeds that are less likely to trigger allergies. This is because they often inherit the Poodle’s curly hair, which is known to shed less and hold onto dander.
Finding a reputable Bichoodle breeder is the key to getting a healthy, well-behaved Bichoodle puppy. A puppy from an ethical breeder has a much better chance of growing into a calm, gentle adult dog.
The average cost of a Bichoodle for sale is usually around AUD $1500 to $4000.
