The Ultimate Shar Pei Guide
About Shar Pei
The Shar Pei dog breed is an ancient breed from China that is known for its wrinkled skin and blue tongue. The Shar Pei dog was bred for guarding livestock and hunting, but is now seen more as a family pet.
Lifespan
8 to 12 years
Weight
40 to 55 pounds
Height
45 to 50 cm
Grooming
Grooming a Shar Pei is relatively easy. Most Shar Pei dogs only need a little grooming once in a while to keep their bristly coat clean and shiny.
Origins
The Shar Pei dog breed originated in southern China, but the circumstances of the breed’s creation are mysterious. There is evidence that the breed was around during the Han Dynasty, over 2,000 years ago.
It is believed that Shar Pei dogs were bred to be hunters and fighters, and their wrinkled skin is meant to protect them from injury.
The Shar Pei dog breed was almost wiped out when the Chinese Communist Party came to power in 1949. Breeders in Hong Kong and Taiwan kept the breed alive even though there were almost no Shar Peis left in China.
Nowadays, the Shar Pei mostly enjoys life as a beloved companion and family pet, though some farms still keep it as a guard dog.
Yes, Shar Peis are devoted and loving towards their family members. They bond closely with their humans but are not overly needy.
Common Health Issues & Considerations
Shar Peis may suffer from:
Hypothyroidism
Demodectic Mange
Pyoderma
Nature / Temperament
Devoted, Loyal, Loving, Calm, Independent
Suitable Environment
The Shar Pei dog breed is not overly large, and their low level of activity means that they don’t need as much space as more energetic dogs.
Due to their calm nature indoors, they can adapt well to apartment living. They will generally be able to live in any size of home.
Other Considerations
● The Shar Pei dog is prone to overheating, and will require cool, shaded areas if they are brought out for exercise.
● While Shar Peis are generally gentle with children, they demand respect and may not react well to younger children who will pull at or poke them.
● Shar Peis are not hypoallergenic.
How can I take good care of my Shar Pei?
Nutrition
Shar Pei puppies should get a high-quality, premium dog food. While they are not very active dogs, they need a balanced diet to grow up to be healthy. Clean water should be made available at all times.
While the Shar Pei dog breed does not have any specific nutritional needs, you may consult with your vet about your specific dog’s diet, if necessary.
Grooming
Shar Peis are low-maintenance dogs, regardless of their coat type (of which there are three).
Recommended Grooming Tips
The Shar-Pei dog breed is naturally clean, and only needs baths around every twelve weeks.
Be sure to dry between the folds of the skin after bathing your Shar Pei.
Brush your Shar Pei’s teeth with vet-approved toothpaste a couple of times a week to prevent tooth and gum diseases.
Exercise
Shar Peis are not high-energy dogs, and will generally only require moderate exercise. Around 30 to 60 minutes of gentle exercise each day is enough for most Shar Peis. Shar Pei puppies can start exercising outdoors as soon as they are cleared to do so by their veterinarian.
Training
Training a Shar Pei dog can be somewhat challenging due to their intelligence and independence. They may not think that what their owner is teaching is the right way to do things.
Obedience training at an early age is a must for Shar Pei puppies. Most Shar Pei puppies can be trained shortly after being brought home from the breeder.
If training on your own is too difficult, it may be a good idea to enrol your Shar Pei puppy in training classes. Make sure that the training methods being used are based on positive reinforcement.
This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.
No, Shar Peis and Shar Pei puppies are not naturally aggressive. They may learn to be aggressive toward other dogs if they are not socialised and trained properly, so it’s best to introduce them to other animals at an early age.
If you are looking for a Shar Pei for sale, we recommend that you adopt from ethical, responsible breeders. The Shar Pei dog breed has had health problems due to unscrupulous breeders in the past, so they need multiple health checks before being released to new owners. The average cost of a Shar Pei for sale will be between AUD $1500 and $4000.
