The Ultimate Yorkshire Terrier Guide
About Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier is a diminuitive dog breed, but what it lacks in terms of physical size, it more than makes up for with tenaciousness and elegance. Those looking at Yorkshire puppies for sale will be charmed by their adorable faces and impressive coats. They’re a great choice for families who live in apartments, so long as any children in the household can learn how to play with these tiny animals.
Lifespan
12 to 15 years
Weight
4 to 6 pounds
Height
20 to 23 cm
Grooming
Expect to brush your Yorkshire puppy around four times a week to get rid of tangles and mats. Bathe your Yorkshire Terrier whenever they get too dirty from play, or every six to eight weeks.
Origins
The Yorkshire Terrier originated in Yorkshire, a county in northern England, in the middle of the 19th century. Immigrants from Scotland traveled to Yorkshire’s towns during the Industrial Revolution to work in factories and coal mines, while also bringing their dogs to keep them company.
The dogs they brought were originally much larger than the Yorkshire Terrier, but quickly bred with local dogs. The resulting terriers would be used to catch rats in the factories and coal mines, and eventually came to have the name Yorkshire Terrier.
The Yorkshire Terrier has been a mainstay of high society since since Victorian noblewomen discovered the numerous positive qualities of this erstwhile rat-catching breed.
Yorkshire Terriers remain popular with dog lovers who want to have a stylish, smart and portable companion.
Yes! The Yorkshire Terrier makes for a great family pet, even if the household has older children and seniors. Younger children may not get along well with Yorkshire Terrier puppies, as the dogs are very small and can easily get injured.
Common Health Issues & Considerations
Yorkshire Terriers may suffer from:
Progressive retinal atrophy
Portosystemic shunt
Hypoglycemia
Nature / Temperament
Brave, Clever, Loyal, Energetic, Playful
Suitable Environment
Yorkshire Terriers can fit into any household, and are a perennial favourite with apartment owners. However, they may not be able to get up tall stairs.
They tend to be relatively active indoors, so they do not necessarily need their own outdoor space. But just like any dog, they love to get outside and meet new people.
Other Considerations

How can I take good care of my Yorkshire Terrier?
Nutrition
Yorkshire Terrier puppies should always be fed high-quality dog food. They do not eat much, so what they do eat should be highly nutritious and contain the mix of protein, carbohydrates and fats that they need to grow properly. Clean water should be made available at all times. Small breed puppies such as the Yorkshire Terrier will need to have multiple meals throughout the day since they cannot digest very much at one time. If necessary. consult with your vet about your specific Yorkie’s nutritional requirements.
Grooming
Yorkshire Terriers require frequent brushing to keep their coats healthy. Most Yorkie owners will opt to keep their dog’s coat relatively long, so regular trips to the groomer will be necessary to keep the dog’s hair neat and tidy.
Recommended Grooming Tips
A gentle brushing technique is best for the Yorkshire Terrier, as their hair tends to be very soft and thin.
You may opt to have your Yorkie’s hair cut shorter than that of a show Yorkie, to make their daily grooming process a little easier.
Brush your dog’s teeth daily with an enzymatic toothpaste to prevent tooth and gum issues, which are common with small breeds.
Exercise
Due to how small Yorkies are, they can get most of their exercising done inside the house. Expect to bring your Yorkshire Terrier on gentle walks totaling around 30 minutes each day. They may also engage in play with children, but under supervision.
Training
Obedience training is a must for Yorkshire Terriers, or they may develop unwanted behaviours. They are intelligent and confident dogs, and may attempt to boss their owner around. Starting with training at a young age is a good idea for Yorkshire puppies. They can typically begin being trained soon after coming home from the breeder. If you require more guidance, you may enrol your Yorkshire Terrier puppy in training classes. Ensure that the training methods are based on positive reinforcement. This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.
If you are looking at Yorkshire Terriers for sale in Sydney, look for good breeders who conduct health checks and genetic tests. Ethical breeders will know the ancestry and genetic profile of all their breedings dogs. The average cost of Yorkshire puppies for sale will be between AUD $2000 and $5000.
