Origins
This purebred takes its name from Reverend John “Jack” Russell, a passionate fox hunter who developed hunting dogs in the 1800s in England. His purpose was to create a working canine that would hunt with hounds, thus, the name “Jack Russell Terrier.”
When Russell passed away, the breed evolved and had longer legs than the original. The new breed became known as the “Parson Russell Terrier,” with “Parson” being another word for “reverend.”
Because of the variance in leg lengths, today, there are two separate breeds: Jack Russell Terrier and Parson Russell Terrier.

The Jack Russell Terrier thrives indoors. However, it is not suited for apartment living as it has an urge to explore. This breed is much better in a house with a large, fenced yard where it can have enough space to play and burn off some energy.
Bear in mind that this breed has the ability to dig, climb and jump, which is why an underground electronic fence will not do. When your dog is spending time in your yard, it is recommended that you supervise it or keep it on a leash.

How can I take good care of my Jack Russell?
Nutrition

Be sure that meat from a named protein source is the main ingredient and that the food has minimal additives or chemicals.
For dogs six months and older, about two meals a day is sufficient. The suggested daily amount is 1.25 to 1.75 cups of high-quality dog food per day.
Avoid giving your Dog human food and table scraps. Also, make sure to give them plenty of clean and fresh water.
Grooming
Smooth-coated Jack Russell Terriers only need to be brushed a few times each week and bathed with quality dog shampoo every four to six weeks. Meanwhile, rough-coated breeds need a little more brushing a week and should be stripped once or twice a year.

Gum disease is a common health issue in Jack Russell Terriers, which is why it is important that you brush your dog’s teeth at least two to three times a week.
