Guinea Pig – Fairfield

Im selling 2 male guniea pigs, They are only sold together and not seperate. One black with white and orange spots called Oreo and his brother, Fluffy with mostly orange but black and white spots too, Biscoff. Both are about 6 months old from what we know. They are a bit timid and not tamed. (They do not bite only nip when they mistake your hand for food) Instead of using hay we use blankets and rugs, we clean the cage atleast once a week and fill the hay bowl and clean the feces out every day. We cut their nails once a week and brush biscoff’s fur as well then. We feed them pellets in the morning and then feed them some veggies around 8pm. They always have hay they can eat. We keep a big water bottle for them always full. The hay we feed them is thin since we have noticed they prefer when its thin and not normal rough, mixed hay. They do not have any medical history from what we know of, no vaccinations nor medicines or anything. They do not like loud noises or sudden movements. They like fresh veggies alot and small snacks every now and then. As i said, they are timid and don’t really trust people. We are selling them with the cage, bottle, chew toys, hides, plastic house, blankets, towels, rugs (to replace the hay they lay on), nail clippers, tunnel and brushes. If theres any food or hay bags left when you buy them, they will be included!

I have male and female guineas pigs looking for their forever homes. Some are a couple months old but none are older than a year :) Please keep in mind that guinea pigs are group animals so unless you already have a piggie it would be best to adopt 2. Guinea Pig – Boondall

We have 10 young boy guinea pigs ready to find their forever home. These are rescued guinea pigs, and were not bred by us. They are $35 each or $50 for 2. We will only sell individual guinea pigs to people that already have existing males. We will need a picture of your setup if you are interested in rehoming anyone. Guinea pigs need a spacious cage as well as daily access to water, grassy hay (not alfalfa), a cup of veggies, and a tablespoon of high quality pellets. We won't be selling to people who intend to breed and strongly encourage against having males and females in the same cage due to the conditions these guys came from.

Origins

Guinea pigs, also known as cavies, were initially domesticated around 2000 BC by the indigenous peoples of the Andes in South America, chiefly for sustenance. However, their sweet dispositions and easy upkeep have endeared them to many as household companions. Spanish traders ferried guinea pigs to Europe in the 16th century, where they charmed elites and royalty alike with their distinctive aesthetics and gentle nature. Presently, guinea pigs are beloved pets globally, treasured for their convivial and affectionate demeanor.

Key Characteristics Of Guinea Pigs

Are Guinea Pigs Family-Friendly?

Yes. A Guinea Pig is a good pet if their owner has the time to dedicate to taking care of them properly. Guinea Pigs need to be handled regularly so they get used to being around people, and do not like to be left alone for long periods of time and can become anxious if they feel isolated.

Common Health Issues & Considerations

Guinea Pigs may suffer from:

Pododermatitis

Malocclusion/dental problems

Ringworm

Nature / Temperament

Sweet, Silly, and Gentle

Suitable Environment

A spacious enclosure is essential, as guinea pigs demand ample room to roam. The advised baseline area spans approximately 7.5 square feet for a solitary guinea pig, with augmented space for each additional companion. More space is always appreciated when it comes to guinea pigs.

Other Considerations

Guinea pigs are communal beings and typically thrive alongside a mate. However, make sure not to put them with rabbits. Nonetheless, it’s imperative to ensure that they share the same gender to prevent inadvertent breeding, unless they are neutered or spayed.

Average cost of a Guinea Pig

Typically, guinea pigs for sale in Australia can cost between $40 to up to $100 depending on the breed.

How can I take good care of my Guinea Pig?

Nutrition

A healthy diet for a Guinea Pig includes hay, a small amount of fresh vegetables, and a limited number of pellets specifically made for Guinea Pigs.

The bulk of the diet should be hay, which provides essential nutrients and helps keep the digestive system running smoothly. Some good options include timothy hay, oat hay, or meadow hay.Fresh vegetables can be given as a supplement, and should include dark leafy greens like kale or spinach, as well as carrots, peas, and other root vegetables.Avoid giving too many vegetables at once, as this can cause stomach upset, but make sure they get enough vitamin C in the form of blueberries, capsicums, and oranges.

Pellets should make up a small part of the diet, no more than 1/4 cup per day. Choose a pellet that is high in fibre and low in sugar to ensure proper nutrition. Also, always give your Guinea Pig access to fresh, clean drinking water.

Grooming

The grooming requisites of guinea pigs depend on their breed. Short-haired guinea pigs demand minimal grooming; a tender brush once a week is enough to dislodge loose hair and sustain coat health. Long-haired varieties, such as the Peruvian or Silkie, will need daily brushing to prevent their fur from tangling and accumulating dirt. All guinea pigs will benefit from periodic nail trims to curb overgrowth that can impede their mobility.

Exercise

Guinea Pigs are social creatures that need both exercise and enrichment in order to stay healthy and happy. Exercise is important for Guinea Pigs to stay active and maintain a healthy weight. Enrichment is important for Guinea Pigs to stimulate their minds and keep them from getting bored.

There are a variety of ways to provide exercise for your Guinea Pig. One way is to let them run around in a safe, enclosed area. Another way is to provide them with toys that they can play with, such as balls or tunnels. It is important to make sure that any toys you give your Guinea Pig are safe and non-toxic.

Enrichment for Guinea Pigs can take many forms. One way to enrich their environment is to provide them with hiding places, such as tunnels or cardboard boxes. You can also give them chew toys, such as hay cubes or wooden blocks, to gnaw on. Another way to enrich their environment is to provide them with different types of food, such as vegetables or fruits, to encourage them to forage.

Training

While guinea pigs might not master tricks as dogs do, they can be coached to a degree. Training principally entails acclimating them to handling and elementary commands like responding when summoned. This is achieved through consistent, gentle handling and by rewarding them with treats like bits of fruit or vegetables.

Most Asked Guinea Pig Questions

The prime diet for guinea pigs predominantly encompasses high-quality hay, which should remain accessible constantly and forms roughly 80% of their intake. Augment this with fresh vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, and leafy greens, which provide essential nutrients and vitamin C. A modest portion of specialised guinea pig pellets can also be integrated daily. Avoid feeding them iceberg lettuce, garlic, onions, or any sugary fruits excessively.

To sustain a clean and happy environment, clean the cage daily by removing the soiled bedding and uneaten food. Have a comprehensive cleaning at least once a week, which involves substituting all bedding, scrubbing the cage with mild soap and water, and ensuring that any toys and accessories are clean. This regimen prevents the accumulation of harmful bacteria and maintains your guinea pig’s comfort and health.

Guinea pigs can get along with other pets, but meticulous supervision and gradual introductions are imperative. Cats and dogs might perceive guinea pigs as prey, so they should never be left unsupervised together. Smaller pets like mice may occasionally share space with guinea pigs, yet they harbor different dietary needs and might display territorial behavior. Do not put guinea pigs with rabbits as they can spread diseases to each other.
