These growing giants need steady, thoughtful meals to avoid health hiccups down the track.

For the early months, aim to split their meals into at least three sittings each day. Think of it like fuelling a slow-burning fire — too much at once, and it can flare out of control; too little, and it sputters.

By the time they tip over the five-month mark, most can shift comfortably to two meals a day.

And don’t be tempted to scoop regular puppy kibble into their dish. Great Dane pups need a formula made for large breeds, packed with the right balance of nutrients to support their fast-growing bones without letting them outpace their joints. Ignore this, and you’ll be courting trouble before you can say “orthopaedic vet.”

Despite their size, Great Danes move through life with the easy rhythm of a Sunday stroll rather than the thundering gallop you might expect.

They don’t need endless games of fetch or marathon hikes. A good half-hour to an hour of gentle exercise each day — a steady walk, a lazy romp in the yard — will suit them down to the ground.

But here’s the catch: resist the urge to overdo it, especially with growing pups. For the first year and a half, think soft, measured movements rather than rough-and-tumble play.

Their joints and bones are still finding their shape, and too much strain early on can stack up trouble that lasts a lifetime. It’s one of those cases where slow and steady really does win the race.

Start working on manners while your Great Dane still fits across your lap — because blink, and they’ll be knocking over coffee tables with a careless wag of the tail. Training a young Dane is far easier than trying to teach a fully-grown giant to mind their size.

Short, lively sessions work best, stitched into a daily routine so that training feels as natural as mealtimes or walks. Make it too long or too dull, and you’ll lose their interest faster than a terrier spotting a rabbit.

Positive reinforcement — kind words, treats, affection — draws out the best in them. Heavy-handedness, on the other hand, bruises their gentle souls and muddies the waters of trust you’ll want to build.
