The Ultimate Siamese Guide

About Siamese

The Siamese cat is an elegant and distinctive breed, instantly recognizable by its sleek, svelte body, almond-shaped blue eyes, and strikingly pointed features. Known for their affectionate and chatty nature, Siamese cats have a long history and are considered one of the oldest domesticated cat breeds.

Grooming

Grooming a Siamese cat is relatively easy compared to some other cat breeds, thanks to their short, sleek coats and minimal shedding.

Origins

The Siamese cat breed originated in what is now Thailand, formerly known as Siam. They have been featured in ancient manuscripts dating back to the 14th century, suggesting that they have been domesticated for centuries. Siamese cats were highly valued in ancient Thai culture, and they were often given as gifts to visiting diplomats and dignitaries.

As the breed gained popularity in the West, the Siamese cat underwent selective breeding to refine its appearance. The original Siamese cats from Thailand were heavier and had rounder faces compared to the slender, elongated features of the modern Siamese. Over time, breeders emphasised the cat’s distinctive traits, such as the almond-shaped blue eyes, slender body, and large ears.

There are now two distinct types of Siamese cats: the traditional or “Applehead” Siamese, with a rounder face and a more robust body, and the modern or “Wedgehead” Siamese, which has a more slender and elongated appearance.

Key Characteristics Of Siameses

Are Siameses Family-Friendly?

Siamese cats are generally considered to be family-friendly pets, as they are affectionate, sociable and intelligent animals. They are known for their strong bonds with their human companions and can be quite playful and interactive. They often get along well with children, particularly if the children are taught how to handle and interact with the cat appropriately.

Common Health Issues & Considerations

Siameses may suffer from:

Feline Asthma

Progressive Retinal Atrophy

Dental Issues

Nature / Temperament

Friendly, Loving, Graceful, Playful, Loyal

Suitable Environment

Since Siamese cats are highly social and intelligent creatures, they thrive in homes where they can receive consistent attention and form strong bonds with their human companions.

Other Considerations

● Siamese cats don’t do well when left alone for long periods, so they’re best suited to households where someone is home regularly.

● Siamese cats are natural climbers and enjoy exploring their environment from a higher vantage point.

● Siamese cats are quite vocal, with a distinctive, loud voice that they use to communicate their needs, feelings, and desires.

How can I take good care of my Siamese?

Nutrition

A balanced and nutritious diet is crucial for the health and well-being of Siamese cats. They require a high-quality cat food, rich in protein and essential nutrients, to support their lean bodies and active lifestyle. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best type and amount of food for your specific cat, taking into account factors such as age, weight, and activity level.

Grooming

The Siamese cat has a short, sleek coat that is relatively low-maintenance. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient to remove loose hair and keep their coat healthy and shiny. Use a soft-bristle brush or grooming mitt to avoid damaging their delicate skin.

Exercise

Daily play sessions with toys that encourage chasing, pouncing, and jumping are essential for keeping their minds and bodies stimulated. Puzzle toys and interactive games can also provide mental stimulation and help prevent boredom.

Training

Siamese cats are highly intelligent and can be trained to perform various tricks and behaviours with positive reinforcement techniques. They respond well to clicker training, which can be used to teach them to sit, stay, come when called and even walk on a leash.

This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.

Most Asked Siamese Questions

Siamese cats are best known for their striking coat pattern, which features a pale or cream-coloured body with darker points on the ears, mask, paws, and tail. They come in various colour points, including: seal point, chocolate point, blue point and lilac point.

No cat breed is truly hypoallergenic, as all cats produce allergens to some extent. However, some breeds, including Siamese cats, are often considered to be more allergy-friendly due to their short coats and lower shedding tendencies.

Finding a reputable Siamese cat breeder is the key to getting healthy, well-behaved Siamese kittens for sale. A kitten from an ethical breeder has a much better chance of growing into a calm, gentle adult cat. The average cost of a Siamese cat for sale is usually around AUD $1000 to $2000.
