The Ultimate Staffy Guide
About Staffy
Popularly known as Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the Staffy is medium-sized dog with a short stature. But despite its size, this dog is actually muscular, athletic and smart.
Lifespan
12 to 14 years
Weight
Male: 13 – 17 kg Female: 11 – 15 kg
Height
Male: 36 – 41 cm Female: 33 – 38 cm
Grooming
One of the reasons why Staffies are so popular is because they’re low maintenance. They have short coats that shed little throughout the year. They commonly come in various coat colours, with Blue Staffies being especially popular. Give your dog a weekly brush to get rid of dead or loose hair.
Origins
Blood sports were very common between the 17th and 18th centuries. During this time, dogs were used to fight bulls, bears and other animals. These fights were organised primarily to entertain the royalty and commoners.
Back then, Staffies were not bred for the attractive visual specimen of today. Instead, they were developed for the ability known as gameness. This involved pitting dogs against bulls or bears to test their strength and skills.
In 1835, blood sports were outlawed in Britain. This happened after the introduction of animal welfare regulations. Since dog fights were easier and cheaper to set up, blood sports proponents turned to this activity.
It is at this point that the bull-baiting dogs were crossed with small-sized terriers. This resulted in a smaller and faster dog breed that weighed about 27kg. It became known as the “Bulldog Terrier” or “Bull and Terrier”.
Breeders decided to refine The Bulldog Terrier further. They achieved this by crossing it with the ancestors of the Manchester Terrier. This cross led to a 14kg – 25kg breed that was named the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
These dogs are now a distinct breed recognised by the world over. In fact, they are the second most popular breed in Australia. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier dog breed of today makes a fine companion.
These dogs are loved for being intelligent, courageous and friendly.
a condition where the kneecap dislocates or moves out of its normal location within the knee joint.
Nature / Temperament
These dogs are loyal, brave and intelligent. They are also quiet, easy-going and dependable.
Suitable Environment
These dogs adapt well to larger apartments, large townhouses and house living.
Other Considerations
● Staffies are not outdoor living dogs.
● They are companion dogs so they thrive in the presence of their owners.
● They can be somewhat aggressive toward other dogs. It’s important to walk your Staffy on a leash.
● Staffies shed very little. They only shed heavily once a year.
● If you want your Staffy to be friendly to other dogs, start socialising it very early.
● Like other terriers, Staffies love to dig. Thus, owners will need to strengthen the bottom of fences using concrete or chicken wire.
How can I take good care of my Staffy?
Nutrition
When it comes to diet, you should feed your Staffy a combination of wet and dry foods. Given their voracious appetite, proper food portioning is important. This way, your Staffy won’t end becoming overweight. The recommended daily intake is 1 ½ to 2 ¼ cups of food.
Grooming
Staffies are average shedders. Brush their coats 1-2 times weekly.
Recommended Grooming Tips
Inspect your Staffies ears weekly for any signs of infection or irritation.
Brush their teeth at least once every week.
Also, trim their nails once per month.
Exercise
These dogs need 1 – 2 hours of exercise every day. You can exercise them in different ways such as taking them for long walks.
Walks are good because they allow Staffordshire Bull Terriers to stimulate their minds through the sights, smells and sounds they encounter.
You can also engage them in activities like high-intensity games or strength training. This helps to keep their muscles in shape.
Training
Staffies can be somewhat difficult to train. Even though they are loving, they can also be stubborn and self-willed. This means that they might not pay attention to what they are told.
Novice owners should learn how to train a Staffy before adopting one.
More experienced Staffy owners will be able to train this breed just fine. All they need is a firm, confident and consistent leader. Experts advise owners to exercise their dogs before training sessions.
Staffies have gotten a bad rep of being aggressive, but this is not true. They are very loving canines and make incredible companions.
As long as they get the right amount of socialisation and training, they will turn out to be friendly. Ensure they are always supervised around children and other dogs.
Yes and no, some like to and others not. But due to their short legs and wide chests, Staffies are at a high risk of drowning. That said, you will have to monitor them constantly around water.
A pied staffy is one with white and other blended colours across its body. Also Staffy dogs can come in a range of colours including red, brindle, fawn, white, black or blue.
