Socks is a rescue kitten from the Armadale Kennel Zone. He's been hand raised from about 3 weeks old in a home with other cats so he's very comfortable with chaos. He sleeps in our bed, he loves supervised time in the backyard and he's full of fun. To take Socks home you'll need to pre-buy his vet work through Hanly Vet it a vet closer to you. Alternatively we can get his vet work done for an additional $170. This includes de-sexing, microchipping, vaccination and a dose of Revolution.

Our darling Cat Alexa is very loved, and due to a change of lifestyle, she requires a new home. If you're a Cat lover, she is a very affectionate yet independent, Tabby Cat. She sleeps at night inside, and loves fresh air outside in the day. We want to see that she goes to a new home that will take care of her and love her. She is microchipped, and house-trained. Get in touch today if you would like to be the new owner.

Domestic Short Hair (DSH) – Kellyville

Milo and Mocha are a bonded pair of brothers, who between them, tick all the boxes. Milo loves to hang out next to you, and Mocha loves to hang out on you! They both love their scritches and cuddles. Milo loves his wet food and rarely says no, Mocha will eat wet food but is more into dry food. Milo is short-haired, and as you can see from the pictures, Mocha is long-haired. Surprisingly he doesn't seem to shed much at all, but does need to be brushed - like all cats - so that his hair doesn't get matted. When they came to me, they spent over a week in our back room, with Mocha hiding in the back corner behind our table tennis table, and Milo in front, protecting him. Truth is that even though Mocha comes across as more vulnerable, he's also more decisive and forward about having his wants met once he gets to know you! Milo follows Mocha's lead, but also loves following his humans around and rolling over on his back for a belly rub (yes, he's a one in a million kitty who loves a good belly rub)! We've been on quite a journey with these babies, and it's important that they and their forever family 100% click before they leave here. Not just because I love it when they come and settle themselves down on the bed next to me every night and are always up for a cuddle :) These two love their window hammocks and more often than not, just share one and watch the world go by. They would not be suited to outdoor life and have shown no inclination to go out. Milo and Mocha had their first birthday yesterday. They are both desexed and fully vaccinated. However, for some reason they were never microchipped. They are due their one year vaccinations around April so rather than doing two vet visits I think that would be the best time to get them microchipped and added to the NSW Pet Register. If you're ever in a position where you feel you might need to give them up, they're a boomerang - please send them home to us as they will always be a precious part of our family. While you're here, please check out my other fosters - they're all listed under 'Domestic short hair - Kellyville'.

Dougie (Doug Doug) is named after my daughter's favourite YouTuber and his name suits him perfectly although you're more than welcome to change it - typical of most orange cats, or maybe most cats, he answers to pretty much anything when he feels like it! Dougie is playful and loves company. He adores a good snuggle and scritch, and a snooze on your bed or the couch. He's just an all round happy kitten who's enjoying his life. :) He is an all-rounder - while he'd love a cat friend (preferably one of his siblings or foster brothers or sisters), he does have an independent streak that means he should be ok with just a human slave to tend to his demands. Dougie is about 15 weeks, desexed and microchipped, but due to the severe shortage of vaccines at the moment, will come to you without his F3 vaccinations. They're due to be back in stock by around April, so he will need to be kept inside. He's been raised as an inddor cat so that won't be a problem. If you're ever in a position where you feel you might need to give him up, please send him home to us - he will always be a part of our family. While you're here, please check out my other fosters - they're all listed under 'Domestic short hair - Kellyville'

Jimmy is outgoing, playful and your new best friend. Jimmy is a black and tan mackerel tabby with white. He would suit a special young boy for a pet as he prefers males. Jimmy's mother is a black oriental who escaped one evening and made him with a local 'Thoroughbred Tom'. So, he's of good stock and hybrid vigour. Jimmy comes with microchip, F3 vaccination, treated for parasites and kitten pack. Pics 1-6 are Jimmy Pic 7 is Thoroughbred Tom Pic 8 is Jimmy born with Mum Sabrina

This is Sid, who is looking for his forever home. He is a kind kitten who loves playing but also enjoys the company of humans. His favourite thing is sitting in boxes and he loves stairs

Ellie

Domestic Short Hair (DSH) – Kellyville

Come and meet Mia, affectionate, very playful, loves to have a chat and if you're outside, follow you from window to window to keep you company. Mia would ideally be suited to a home with other cats (or one of his siblings) for company. He's untested with dogs but is a brave and strong little soul so should be ok with a cat loving dog. Mia is about 14 weeks, and is very happy and comfortable with us, but we need to move him on to his furrever parents so that we can take in the next lot of fosters (after a bit of a holiday)! He's a boomerang, so if you're ever in a position where you feel you might need to give him up, please send him home. Don't forget to check out my other fosters!

The Ultimate Domestic Short Hair (DSH) Guide

About Domestic Short Hair (DSH)

The Domestic Shorthair is a catch-all category for any mixed-breed cat that doesn’t have a particular look. That said, there are some characteristics that many domestic shorthairs share. They typically have short fur that is easy to care for, and their coat comes in a wide variety of colours and patterns. Many Domestic Shorthairs are known for their affectionate, laid-back personalities, and they make great companions for people of all ages.

Grooming

Grooming

A Domestic Shorthair cat’s grooming needs are not as extensive as those of a long-haired cat breed. However, regular grooming is still important to keeping your house cat healthy and looking their best.

Origins

The term “domestic shorthair” (DSH) is used to describe cats that are not of a specific breed, but rather of mixed or unknown ancestry.

Because the Domestic Shorthair is a pseudo-breed, specimens of this landrace in a particular geographic region will have a specific type of body shape and size, though colouring may revert to a tabby cat pattern after a couple of generations.

This pseudo-breed is also often referred to as a house cat or alley cat (for feral specimens).

Key Characteristics Of Domestic Short Hair (DSH)s

Are Domestic Short Hair (DSH)s Family-Friendly?

Yes, Domestic Shorthairs are the most common house cats in the world, and despite their wide range of personalities, they tend to get along well with humans.

Common Health Issues & Considerations

Domestic Short Hair (DSH)s may suffer from:

Obesity

Diabetes

Heart Desease

Nature / Temperament

Social, Active, and Athletic

Suitable Environment

The ideal environment for a Domestic Shorthair is a clean, comfortable home with plenty of space to roam and explore. While every cat is different, most will thrive in a loving home environment where they feel safe and secure. It is best if there are plenty of windows and natural light, as cats love to bask in the sun. There should also be a variety of hiding places, perches, and scratching posts for the cat to enjoy.

Other Considerations

● Domestic Shorthairs tend to be muscular cats with rounded heads and paws.

● Domestic Shorthairs are distantly related to the American Shorthair and British Shorthair.

● They are known to be hunters and free-roaming Domestic Shorthairs can decimate the population of small birds and other wildlife.

How can I take good care of my Domestic Short Hair (DSH)?

Nutrition

A Domestic Shorthair’s diet should be high in protein and fat, and low in carbohydrates. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means that their bodies are designed to digest and use only animal-based proteins. Animal proteins contain all of the essential nutrients that cats need, including taurine, arginine, and vitamins A, B, and D. Fat is an important source of energy for cats, and helps to keep their coat healthy and shiny.

If feeding dry food to your Domestic Shorthair, watch out for signs of dehydration in your cat and monitor the amount of water that they drink. Ensure that they always have access to fresh, clean drinking water. You may opt for a cat fountain if your Domestic Shorthair prefers to drink flowing water.

Grooming

Domestic Shorthairs are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. Weekly brushing is sufficient.

Exercise

A Domestic Shorthair cat is a medium sized cat and therefore needs a moderate amount of exercise. It is important to provide your Domestic Shorthair with opportunities to run, jump and play as this will help to keep them healthy and fit. A good way to provide your cat with exercise is to create an indoor obstacle course for them to enjoy. This can be simply done by placing some furniture around the room or by purchasing some cat toys that encourage physical activity. Be sure to also provide your Domestic Shorthair with plenty of opportunities to climb as this is another great way for them to stay active.

Training

A Domestic Shorthair does not require any special training. However, in general, all cats benefit from some form of socialisation and training in order to help them learn how to appropriately interact with humans and their environment. For Domestic Shorthairs, this may include things like learning how to use a litter box, being comfortable with being handled and groomed, and learning basic commands such as “sit” or “stay.”

This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.

Most Asked Domestic Short Hair (DSH) Questions

The main difference between these two types of cats is their coat length. As their name suggests, Domestic Shorthair cats have shorter fur, while Domestic Long Hair cats have longer fur.

No. Due to the wide variety of Domestic Shorthair cat traits, one cannot definitively say that they are hypoallergenic. Individual cats may or may not produce less of the proteins that cause an allergic reaction.

If you are searching for Domestic Shorthair kittens for sale, it’s important to only deal with reputable breeders. Despite this not being a distinct breed, ethical treatment of the animals should still be paramount. The average cost of Domestic Shorthair kittens for sale will be between AUD $100 and $600.
