The Ultimate Exotic Shorthair Guide
About Exotic Shorthair

Grooming
Although their coats are less maintenance-heavy than the Persian’s, Exotic Shorthairs still need regular grooming.
Origins
The Exotic Shorthair was created sometime during the 1950s to 1960s when American Shorthair breeders started adding Persian cats into the breeding lines. The aim was to improve the coat quality of the American Shorthair, but the result was a cat that looked like a Persian but with a short, plush coat. Recognizing the charm and appeal of these cats, breeders began a program to establish them as a breed, and the Exotic Shorthair was recognised as its own breed in the late 1960s. Today, it is one of the most popular short-haired cat breeds in the world.
Yes. Exotic Shorthairs make wonderful family pets. They get along well with people of all ages and can be good with other pets. Their calm and gentle nature often makes them a great choice for families with children.
Common Health Issues & Considerations
Exotic Shorthairs may suffer from:
Brachycephalic Syndrome
Polycystic Kidney Disease
Dental Issues
Nature / Temperament
Sweet-natured, Easygoing, Loyal, Playful, Quiet
Suitable Environment
This breed is well-suited to indoor living and would be perfectly content in an apartment setting. They appreciate a calm and stable environment, so a quiet household would suit them best. However, they can adapt to a more lively setting provided they have a peaceful place to retreat to.
Other Considerations
● They’re well-suited for those who work long hours as they’re quite content to be left on their own for periods of time.
● Their unique teddy-bear appearance sets the Exotic Shorthair apart from other breeds.
● While their flat faces, short dense coats, and round bodies may initially give them a grumpy look, they’re anything but – these cats are incredibly sweet and loveable.
How can I take good care of my Exotic Shorthair?
Nutrition
Exotic Shorthairs require a balanced diet of high-quality cat food. It’s important to monitor their food intake to prevent obesity, a common issue in this breed. Ensure they have access to fresh water at all times.
Grooming
Despite having a short coat, Exotic Shorthairs can shed quite a bit. Regular brushing, ideally once a week, can help to manage this. This practice not only removes loose fur but also spreads natural oils across the skin, helping to keep the coat healthy and shiny.
Recommended Grooming Tips
Use a soft-bristle brush or grooming glove to brush away any dead or loose hair and dander and keep your Exotic Shorthair’s coat looking fresh.
Due to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) nature, Exotic Shorthairs often have tear staining around their eyes. These stains occur when tear fluid accumulates on the fur. Regularly wiping the area under their eyes with a soft, damp cloth can help to prevent this.
Brush their teeth regularly with a toothpaste that’s formulated for cats. Regular brushing can help to prevent plaque build-up and dental disease.
Exercise
Regular play sessions will help to keep your Exotic healthy and fit. Provide a variety of toys to keep them entertained. Much like other cats, they enjoy climbing and having a high view of their surroundings, so cat towers and perches can be a great way to give them indoor activity.
Training
Exotic Shorthairs are intelligent cats that can be trained with patience and consistency. They can learn simple commands and can even be trained to use a scratching post instead of your furniture.
This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.
Unlike some other cat breeds, Exotic Shorthairs don’t require regular baths. Unless your cat gets into something dirty, bathing every few months should suffice.
No cat breed is truly hypoallergenic, and this includes the Exotic Shorthair. Despite being descended from the Persian cat breed, the Exotic Shorthair still produces the same allergy-causing protein that causes a reaction in people with cat allergies.
Finding a reputable Exotic Shorthair breeder is the key to getting a healthy, well-behaved Exotic Shorthair kitten. Exotic Shorthair kittens for sale from ethical breeders have a much better chance of growing into calm, gentle adult cats. The average cost of a Exotic Shorthair for sale is usually around AUD $1000 to $3000.
