The Ocicat’s short coat requires minimal grooming. A weekly brush will suffice to remove loose hairs.

Origins

The Ocicat was a happy accident. It wasn’t bred to resemble the wild spotted cats but rather emerged from experimental breedings between the Siamese and Abyssinian in the 1960s in the United States. The aim was to create an Abyssinian-pointed Siamese. However, the breeders were pleasantly surprised by a golden spotted kitten, which eventually became the foundation of the Ocicat breed. The name “Ocicat” is derived from the Ocelot, a wild cat, due to the similar appearance.

Key Characteristics Of Ocicats

Are Ocicats Family-Friendly?

Common Health Issues & Considerations

Ocicats may suffer from:

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Amyloidosis

Nature / Temperament

Adaptable, Loyal, Lively, Affectionate, Intelligent

Suitable Environment

A suitable environment for an Ocicat is one that combines safety with ample opportunities for play, exploration, and social interaction. Given their adaptable nature, they can thrive in various settings, from spacious homes to smaller apartments, as long as their basic needs for engagement and companionship are met.

Other Considerations

  • Despite their wild appearance, Ocicats have no wild DNA. Their spots are a result of domestic breedings.
  • They often “talk” with their owners, making a range of chirps, purrs, and meows.
  • Their intelligence and agility make them excellent contenders for agility competitions.

How can I take good care of my Ocicat?

Nutrition

The Ocicat requires a balanced diet to maintain its health and energy. High-quality commercial cat food, rich in protein, is recommended. Some Ocicats enjoy raw diets, but consultation with a veterinarian is essential before making any changes. Ensure fresh water is always available.

Grooming

Ocicats have a short, sleek coat that’s relatively low maintenance, but proper grooming is still essential for their overall health and appearance. Even though Ocicats have a short coat, it’s still beneficial to give them a gentle brushing once a week. This helps in removing any loose fur, distributing the natural oils on their skin, and reducing the chances of hairballs.

Exercise

Being lively cats, Ocicats need a good amount of daily exercise. Interactive toys, feather wands, and laser pointers can be excellent tools. Consider cat trees or vertical spaces for them to climb and explore.

Training

Ocicats are intelligent and can be trained relatively easily. Using positive reinforcement techniques, you can teach them tricks, leash walking, and even to fetch. Regular play and interactive toys can aid mental stimulation.

This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.

Most Asked Ocicat Questions

Yes, Ocicats can adapt to apartment living provided they have enough stimulation and exercise.

No cat breed is truly hypoallergenic, including the Ocicat. They are seasonal shedders, which may cause allergy flare-ups in owners with cat allergies.

Finding a reputable Ocicat breeder is the key to getting a healthy, well-behaved Ocicat kitten. Ocicat kittens for sale from ethical breeders have a much better chance of growing into calm, gentle adult cats. The average cost of an Ocicat for sale is usually around AUD $1000 to $1500.
