Common Questions to Ask your Dog Breeder

Adopting a puppy is a huge decision and responsibility. To find the right breed for you and your lifestyle, be sure to find a reputable breeder that is knowledgeable and willing to answer your questions and provide records. Here are some important questions to ask your breeder:

Meet the dam. Meet the sire if they’re on site. Check for their temperament, body condition, and health. Calm, healthy parents will likely produce healthy pups. If the whole litter is there, check each puppy and take note of their confidence, curiosity and energy.

From birth to eight weeks, pups need people time and gentle handling. They need to get used to various sounds, short car rides and new places. This is essential for their socialisation and helps them adapt better to new homes. Ask what the pups have seen and heard. Check for the pup’s response to being called, crate time, and simple cues.

Each breed has its known health risks. Be sure to check for health screenings tailored to that breed. Request copies of the parents’ certificates and the puppy’s health file.

Ask the breeder what food the puppy has been eating. Ask for the brand, portion size and feeding schedule, and follow the same diet for the first few days. If you want to change his food, do so gradually across several days.

Ask what vaccines they’ve had and when, whether they have been wormed or given flea control. Find out the clinic names and any treatment that’s been given. Find out the schedule for the next round of shots.

Look for:

  • Health records and microchip details
  • Copies of parents’ health certificates
  • Registration or pedigree papers (if relevant)
  • Terms on returns or support
  • Clear sales contract with seller details
