Same goes for Olaf, the sire, - he's an Grand Australian Show Dog Champion. Additionally, Tyra has had a Herding Instinct Test, which verifies her breed background as a herding dog.
We are small Finnish Lapphund breeders based in Sydney, Australia.
Being family-based, we consider our animals family members too. We take great pride in taking care of them just as we would care for ourselves and other humans around us. For that, we are rewarded with excellent rapport with our pets, their readiness and, in fact, eagerness to follow the commands – both at home and during competitions and shows.
This implies great degree of responsibility for well-being of our animals and, of course, their offspring. We are and will remain rather selective as to where will our young find their forever home. We are also keen on maintaining friendly relations with the new owners of our puppies

Origins
The Finnish Lapphund has a long history, with roots in the harsh climates of the Arctic Circle. They were originally bred by the Sami, the indigenous people of Lapland, a region stretching across northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. For centuries, these dogs were used primarily for herding reindeer.
Over time, the breed’s purpose has evolved, and while they still retain their herding instincts, most Finnish Lapphunds today are kept as companion animals. The breed was officially recognized by the Finnish Kennel Club in 1945 as the Lapponian Shepherd Dog, and over the years has come to be known by its current name.
The Finnish Lapphund is an excellent family pet. They are naturally gentle, patient, and protective, making them a great fit for households with children.
Finnish Lapphunds are versatile and can adapt to various living situations. However, they are active dogs and need sufficient space to move around freely.
Other Considerations
● Finnish Lapphunds have strong herding instincts.
● Lapphunds are typically good with other pets, especially when socialised properly from a young age.
● A Lapphund’s friendliness combined with a natural instinct to alert their owners of any unusual activity makes them excellent watchdogs.
How can I take good care of my Finnish Lapphund?
Nutrition
A balanced diet is crucial for the Finnish Lapphund’s health. High-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared, should be appropriate to the dog’s age (puppy, adult, or senior).
Some dogs are prone to getting overweight, so monitor your dog’s calorie consumption and weight level. Treats can be an important aid in training but should not constitute more than 10% of the daily caloric intake.
Grooming
They shed heavily twice a year, during which more frequent brushing will be needed.
Recommended Grooming Tips
Brush your Lapphund at least once a week to remove dead hair and prevent tangles and matting. A slicker brush or a rake is ideal for this purpose.
Finnish Lapphunds do not require frequent baths. Bathing every few months or when the dog is particularly dirty should suffice.
Keep your Lapphund’s nails trimmed. If you can hear their nails clicking on the floor, they’re too long. Long nails can cause discomfort and can potentially lead to problems with walking.
Exercise
A Finnish Lapphund should ideally have at least one to two hours of exercise per day. This should not only consist of walks but also time spent playing games, practising obedience and agility skills, or participating in dog sports. This breed is a natural at activities that involve chasing and retrieving, such as fetch or flyball, and they can also excel at herding events, obedience, rally, and agility.
Training
Training should start from a young age, leveraging the Lapphund’s intelligence and eagerness to please. They respond best to positive reinforcement techniques. Socialisation should also start early, exposing them to a range of people, animals, environments, and experiences.
This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.
Yes. Their adaptability, eagerness to please, and generally calm demeanour make them a good choice for first-time owners, provided the owners can meet the breed’s exercise and grooming needs.
Finding a reputable Finnish Lapphund breeder is the key to getting a healthy, well-behaved Finnish Lapphund puppy. A puppy from an ethical breeder has a much better chance of growing into a calm, gentle adult dog. The average cost of a Finnish Lapphund puppy for sale is usually around AUD $1000 to $2000.
