The Ultimate Devon Rex Guide

About Devon Rex

The Devon Rex, with its pixie-like features, plush waves of curls, and out-of-the-ordinary character, is an intriguing breed of cat that makes for a delightful pet.

Grooming

Grooming needs for a Devon Rex are somewhat lower than for other breeds, due to their thin coat.

Origins

The Devon Rex’s origin is linked to a single feral curly-coated tom that lived in Devonshire, England in the late 1950s. The first known Devon Rex was a kitten named Kirlee, born in 1960 from a cross between this feral tom and a straight-coated calico. Unlike the other kittens in his litter, Kirlee had a coat of soft, wavy fur, which was the first occurrence of the Devon Rex genetic mutation. The breed has since spread worldwide, becoming popular for its playful nature and distinctive look.

Key Characteristics Of Devon Rexs

Are Devon Rexs Family-Friendly?

Yes. Their social and friendly nature allows them to form close bonds with their human families, including children and other pets. With their friendly and outgoing temperament, they make excellent companions and family pets.

Common Health Issues & Considerations

Devon Rexs may suffer from:

Hereditary Myopathy

Patellar Luxation

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Nature / Temperament

Playful, Sociable, Mischievous, Affectionate, Intelligent

Suitable Environment

Devon Rex cats prefer warm environments. Their thin coat doesn’t provide the same level of insulation as most cats, so they feel the cold more acutely. In colder climates or seasons, they may need additional warmth, like heated beds or sweaters.

Other Considerations

● The Devon Rex’s standout feature is its soft, wavy coat, which feels similar to suede. The curls can vary from loose waves to tight ringlets, covering the cat’s body, tail, and even the ears.

● Devon Rex cats have fewer layers of fur than the average cat. They possess only the undercoat, also known as the down hair, which contributes to their unique, curly appearance

● Perhaps due to their elfish appearance, Devons have earned the affectionate moniker, “alien cats.” Their large ears, high cheekbones, and wide-set eyes give them an otherworldly, pixie-like look that is both endearing and striking.

How can I take good care of my Devon Rex?

Nutrition

Caring for a Devon Rex includes balanced nutrition, regular exercise, mental stimulation, grooming, and veterinary care. A diet rich in high-quality protein will help maintain their overall health and coat condition. Devon Rex cats are active and will enjoy interactive toys and games for physical exercise and mental stimulation.

Grooming

Devon Rexes can be prone to oily skin, so regular, gentle baths may be necessary to keep their coat and skin clean.

Exercise

Their high energy levels and curious nature mean they need ample opportunities for play and exploration. While they are active, they also love to cuddle and enjoy a good snooze on a warm lap after a play session. It’s all about balance and providing enough stimulation to meet their active, curious natures while also giving them plenty of time for relaxation and bonding.

Training

The Devon Rex is a highly intelligent and interactive breed, which makes them relatively easy to train compared to some other cat breeds. Training your Devon Rex not only teaches them beneficial behaviours but also provides them with much-needed mental stimulation.

This is general information and should not be relied on for adopting or purchasing advice.

Most Asked Devon Rex Questions

No cat is completely hypoallergenic, including the Devon Rex. However, their thin coat sheds less than that of many other breeds, which may reduce allergens.

Yes, Devon Rex cats are known for their sociable and friendly nature. They get along well with children and other pets, making them a great choice for a family pet.

Finding a reputable Devon Rex breeder is the key to getting a healthy, well-behaved Devon Rex kitten. Devon Rex kittens for sale from ethical breeders have a much better chance of growing into calm, gentle adult cats. The average cost of a Devon Rex for sale is usually around AUD $1500 to $3000.
