Grooming
Grooming needs for a Devon Rex are somewhat lower than for other breeds, due to their thin coat.
Origins
The Devon Rex traces its roots to a single feral curly-coated tom living in Devonshire, England, in the late 1950s. The first known Devon Rex, a kitten named Kirlee, was born in 1960 from this tom and a straight-coated calico. Unlike his littermates, Kirlee sported a soft, wavy coat, marking the first occurrence of the Devon Rex genetic mutation. The breed has since spread worldwide, celebrated for its playful nature and distinctive appearance.
Yes. Their social and friendly disposition allows them to bond closely with human families, including children and other pets. Their outgoing temperament makes them excellent companions and family members.
Devon Rex cats thrive in warm environments. Their thin coat offers less insolation than most cats, making them more sensitive to cold. In colder climates or seasons, they may need extra warmth, such as heated beds or sweaters.
Other Considerations
The Devon Rex’s standout feature is its soft, wavy coat, which feels like suede. The curls vary from loose waves to tight ringlets, covering the body, tail, and ears.
Devon Rex cats have fewer fur layers, possessing only the undercoat, or down hair, which contributes to their unique, curly appearance.
Due to their elfish look, Devons are affectionately called “alien cats.” Their large ears, high cheekbones, and wide-set eyes give them a pixie-like, otherworldly charm.
How can I take good care of my Devon Rex?
Nutrition
Caring for a Devon Rex involves balanced nutrition, regular exercise, mental stimulation, grooming, and veterinary care. A diet rich in high-quality protein maintains their health and coat condition. Active by nature, Devon Rex cats enjoy interactive toys and games for physical exercise and mental stimulation.
Grooming
Devon Rexes may develop oily skin, necessitating regular, gentle baths to keep their coat and skin clean.
Recommended Grooming Tips
Use a gentle, cat-safe shampoo and avoid frequent baths to prevent drying out their skin.
The Devon Rex’s large ears can accumulate wax, potentially leading to infections. Check their ears weekly and use a vet-approved ear cleaner if needed.
Regular dental care benefits Devon Rex cats. Brush their teeth with vet-approved toothpaste to prevent dental disease.
Exercise
Their high energy and curiosity demand ample play and exploration opportunities. While active, they also love to cuddle and enjoy a warm lap after playtime. Balance stimulation for their active, curious nature with plenty of relaxation and bonding time.
Training
The Devon Rex’s intelligence and interactive nature make them relatively easy to train. Training not only teaches beneficial behaviours but also provides much-needed mental stimulation.
This information is general and should not be used for adoption or purchasing decisions. Consult an expert for detailed care and requirements of the breed.
No cat is completely hypoallergenic, including the Devon Rex. However, their thin coat sheds less than that of many other breeds, which may reduce allergens.
Yes, Devon Rex cats are known for their sociable and friendly nature. They get along well with children and other pets, making them a great choice for a family pet.
Finding a reputable Devon Rex breeder is the key to getting a healthy, well-behaved Devon Rex kitten. Devon Rex kittens for sale from ethical breeders have a much better chance of growing into calm, gentle adult cats. The average cost of a Devon Rex for sale is usually around AUD $1500 to $3000.
