We have four gorgeous pure-bred black poodle puppies, 2 males and 2 females, available to good homes. They are 'The Dancers' litter, reflecting the light, jaunty movement poodles are renowned for, as well as their dam's name - Ginger Rogers. Their kennel names pay homage to dancers from Hollywood's Golden Age.
Mum (photos 10 and 11) and Dad (Scout - photo 12) are both Moyen or Medium poodles. This is a European size, larger than a miniature but smaller than a standard. As adults, the pups are expected to weight between 9 kg (mum's weight) and 13.5 kg (dad's weight.) We love the size - big enough to feel like a 'real dog' but small enough to pick up.
You know exactly what you are getting when you buy a poodle, genetically and temperamentally, unlike blends. Ours are very chill puppies, no fighting or resource guarding, while also curious and playful. They have interacted with little children since they were three weeks old. Ginger and Scout were both 100% clear on genetic testing. As a heavier dog, Scout has also been hip and elbow scored, with excellent results.
The puppies have been raised on our farm, Chestnut Park, in Shady Creek, West Gippsland, Victorian. We follow the Puppy Culture program of character development, enrichment and socialisation. Ginger is a young mum at just over two years old, and loves to play with her pups. She is still feeding them several times a day as six-week-olds. The pups have been wormed every fortnight, and were vaccinated and microchipped at six weeks. They will not be released to buyers until they are at least nine weeks old, to reduce the risk of a fear spike (common in eight-week-old-pups) when they first move.
One of the delights of poodles is the multitude of ways you can groom them, anything from a classic show cut to an oodle-like teddy-bear cut. You can DIY or using a groomer. Our poodle Ginger and lagotto Larry are close cut every three months, other than their heads, because they live on a farm. Photos 10 and 11 show Ginger with two very different looks.
Buyers and puppies will be protected by RPBA breeding ethics, which include a documented refund policy, including a cooling off period, a health guarantee, and a requirement that the new owner will not relinquish the Puppy to any animal shelter, charity or RSPCA, instead returning the puppy to us or allowing us to help with rehoming.
Puppies will go their new homes with:
- a blanket carrying their mother's scent, colour coordinated with their puppy collar and lead
- two toys, a new one and a favourite from the weaning pen
- a starter supply of Lifewise food - top quality, Australian-made dry food for convenient feeding.
About the individual puppies:
Eleanor 'Leni' Powell, the firstborn, has the slightest trace of white on her chin and chest. While she is the smallest, she is the most adventurous at present, one jump ahead of her siblings in exploring more of our large garden every day. We should have called her 'Dora the Explorer'. She plays energetically with her mum and and seeks out attention from her humans. Weight at 6 weeks: 2.1 kg.
Fred Astaire has 'tap shoes' - slight traces of white on his back feet. He is generally a placid boy, though he enjoys a friendly rumble with his brother, and with Leni. Weight at 6 weeks: 2.4 kg.
Sammy Davis Jr should perhaps have been called Channing Tatum as he was the chunkiest baby puppy. His coat is solid black. Like Fred, he has a calm temperament, but enjoys a friendly wrestle. Weight at 6 weeks: 2.4 kg.
Cyd Charisse (F) is also solid black. She was perhaps the quietest puppy, and her mother quickly singled her out for special attention, by playing with her quite boisterously. Tough love perhaps. As a result, Cyd now holds her own with her more lively siblings. Weight at 6 weeks: 2.3 kg.
